How to Spot a Misleading Chart in 5 Seconds
Data literacy is a survival skill
Misleading charts are everywhere — in news, marketing, and even internal reports. Here are 5 instant red flags.
1. Truncated Y-axis
When the Y-axis starts at 95 instead of 0, a 2% change looks like a cliff. Always check the axis labels.
2. Cherry-picked date ranges
Showing only Q4 of a great year? Zoom out. The full picture might tell a different story.
3. Dual Y-axes with different scales
Two variables plotted on different scales can create fake correlations. Ice cream sales and drownings both rise in summer — that's not causation.
4. 3D effects
3D pie charts distort proportions. The slice closest to the viewer looks bigger. Always prefer flat, clean charts.
5. Missing context
"Revenue grew 300%!" — from $100 to $400 on a base of millions? Context is everything.
Train your eyes to spot these tricks, and you'll never be fooled by a chart again.
