How to Build a Personal Brand as a Creative in Africa
Your portfolio is your new CV
In Africa's booming creative economy, personal branding is the difference between waiting for opportunities and attracting them. Here's a practical playbook.
1. Pick your platform
Don't be everywhere — be excellent somewhere. Video editors → YouTube/TikTok. Designers → Behance/Dribbble. Writers → LinkedIn/Medium. Photographers → Instagram.
2. The 80/20 content rule
80% value (tutorials, tips, behind-the-scenes, free resources). 20% promotion (your services, portfolio pieces, testimonials). Nobody follows an ad account.
3. Document, don't create
Instead of brainstorming "content ideas," document your real work. Editing a client video? Screen-record 30 seconds of your process. That's a post.
4. Consistent visual identity
Same profile photo everywhere. Same 2-3 brand colors. Same font on your thumbnails. People should recognize your content before reading your name.
5. Network with intention
- Comment meaningfully on bigger creators' posts (not "Nice!")
- Collaborate with peers at your level
- Share other people's work generously
The best time to start building your brand was yesterday. The second best time is now.
