The Psychology of Fonts: Why Your Typeface Choice Matters More Than You Think
Fonts communicate before words are read
Your brain processes typeface personality in milliseconds — before reading a single word. Choose wrong and your message is undermined. Choose right and credibility skyrockets.
Serif fonts = Trust & tradition
Times New Roman, Georgia, Garamond. Banks, law firms, and newspapers use serifs because they signal authority and reliability.
Sans-serif fonts = Modern & clean
Inter, Helvetica, Poppins. Tech companies, startups, and apps prefer sans-serif for its clean, approachable feel.
Monospace fonts = Technical & precise
Fira Code, JetBrains Mono. Perfect for code blocks, terminal output, and data displays.
Display/Script fonts = Personality & emotion
Playfair Display, Lobster. Use sparingly — for headlines or logos only. Never for body text.
The golden rules
- Maximum 2 typefaces per project (1 for headings, 1 for body)
- Minimum 16px body text on web (18px on mobile)
- Line height: 1.5-1.7x the font size for comfortable reading
- Font pairing tool: fontpair.co
