Storytelling in Video: The 3-Act Structure Every Creator Must Know
Every viral video follows the same skeleton
Hollywood blockbusters, YouTube essays, and 60-second TikToks all use the 3-act structure. Here's how to apply it to your content.
Act 1: The Hook (first 10%)
State the problem or create curiosity. "Most people don't know that your phone is listening to you — here's proof." The audience must think: "I need to watch this."
Act 2: The Journey (next 75%)
Present your main content. Use the But / Therefore technique (from South Park creators): each point should connect with "but" or "therefore," not just "and then."
- "Password managers are secure. But what if the manager itself gets hacked?"
- "That's why Bitwarden uses zero-knowledge encryption, therefore even they can't read your vault."
Act 3: The Resolution (final 15%)
Deliver the payoff. Summarize the key takeaway. Give a call to action. Leave the viewer with a strong final image or statement.
Pro tip: Write your ending first
Know where you're going before you start filming. The best creators script their last line before their first shot.
